 Strength WoD:

Deadlift

  • The Deadlift. A seminal movement in all of the strength building moves out there in “Fitness Land”.  Quite simply if we don’t practice this fantastic move and practice it in all varieties of light to heavy weight. From small reps to large. From using it inside of high paced WoDs to Strength Days, we miss out on all of the benefits it gives us. Namely speaking the art of controlling our midline with tension. Learning how to use that tension and pick up enormous objects of all kinds of shapes safely. All this in turn offers us something tremendously important outside of the gym environment. It offers us independence.
  • Independence is something we probably take for granted in our teens, 20’s, & 30’s and so on. Yet once we start to age past these points things start to feel a bit different and dare we say more difficult. Whereas once we would head to Bunnings and grab bags of mulch for the garden and think nothing of it. Then one day find ourselves unable to perform these tasks without struggle or even pain. Cue some “general” low back pain, tight hips & an all-round stiff feeling we start to find ourselves being advised no to heavy lifting, especially things like the deadlift. We get told to go swimming or walking and avoid anything above 5 kilos indefinitely! Whilst this advise was probably given with the sincerest of intentions it unfortunately only serves to derail our human potential as functional beings.
  • instead of avoiding days like these you should be chomping at the bit to get up here and lift a bit of heavy weight. Today’s strength day offers a bit of everything. Some large rep schemes, some low rep schemes. All of which have the intention of being done “Heavy”. It’s these kind of days that reinforce the importance of strength training and how it transcends to everyday life. I don’t know about you but I want to be able to still head to Bunnings when I’m 75 and be able to pick up a bag of mulch on my own and show that I can look after myself. Don’t you???
  • All this time under tension will have huge benefit to your strength gains! Get around each other, watch your buddies lift, grab sone high fives and lets roll!
  • Hold the standards. Form is priority as always.
  • Scale as needed.
  • Stay Humble. work Hard. Be Happy.
